Earth Day is observed around the world on 22 April as a call to protect our environment and create a healthier, more sustainable future.
Environmental issues are also issues of equality. Climate change, pollution, natural disasters and inadequate access to clean water and other resources can deepen existing social and economic inequalities. Women and girls—particularly those already experiencing poverty, displacement or discrimination—often face greater risks while having less influence over the decisions affecting their communities.
Climate Justice Is Gender Justice
Zonta recognizes that gender equality and climate justice are closely connected.
Women must be included in environmental planning, disaster preparedness, scientific research, policy development and community decision-making. Their knowledge, experience and leadership are essential to developing effective and equitable solutions.
Through the Zonta Says NOW initiative, Zonta members raise awareness of the effects of climate change on women and girls and advocate for gender-equal climate action.
Areas of Concern
Environmental and climate-related challenges can affect women and girls by:
Increasing economic insecurity and displacement.
Interrupting education and access to health care.
Increasing unpaid caregiving responsibilities.
Creating greater risks of exploitation and gender-based violence following disasters.
Limiting access to food, water, sanitation and safe housing.
Excluding women from environmental policy and resource decisions.
Addressing these challenges requires both environmental responsibility and a commitment to human rights.
Take Action for Earth Day
Zonta clubs, individuals and community partners can participate by:
Including women in local environmental and emergency-planning conversations.
Hosting a program about climate justice and gender equality.
Evaluating whether community emergency plans address the needs of women and girls.
Supporting women-led environmental organizations or businesses.
Organizing a cleanup, tree planting or native-garden project.
Reducing waste and unnecessary single-use materials at meetings and events.
Collecting needed supplies for emergency shelters.
Raising awareness about the connection between disasters and gender-based violence.
Advocating for safe water, clean air, sustainable transportation and resilient communities.
Sharing practical steps households and organizations can take to prepare for emergencies.
Step Forward for Equality
Protecting the planet and advancing women’s rights are not separate goals. Sustainable progress requires women and girls to have equal access to education, resources, leadership and decision-making.
On Earth Day and throughout the year, Zonta District 3 encourages everyone to take meaningful action for a safer, healthier and more equitable world.
