Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women
Taking Action Throughout the Year
Zonta District 3 and its clubs work throughout the year to raise awareness of gender-based violence, support survivors and advocate for lasting change.
Across the District, Zontians turn advocacy into action by:
Organizing walks and community events to raise awareness of domestic and sexual violence
Gathering at state houses and other government buildings to advocate for stronger laws and protections
Meeting with legislators and public officials about issues affecting women and girls
Requesting proclamations recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the 16 Days of Activism
Hosting educational programs, panel discussions and community conversations
Sharing information about domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and child marriage
Supporting shelters, family justice centers and other organizations serving survivors
Collecting clothing, toiletries, household supplies and other necessities
Creating public displays and lighting community landmarks in orange
Partnering with schools, businesses, civic organizations and service providers
Using traditional and social media to challenge attitudes that allow violence to continue
These activities reflect Zonta’s combined commitment to service and advocacy. Direct service helps meet immediate community needs, while advocacy works to change the laws, policies and attitudes that contribute to violence and inequality.
A Worldwide Zonta Campaign
Launched in 2012, Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women unites Zonta clubs around the world in the effort to prevent and end gender-based violence.
The campaign advances the human rights of women and supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
16 Days of Activism
Zonta’s advocacy is active throughout the year, but it becomes especially visible during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, observed annually from 25 November through 10 December.
During these 16 days, District 3 clubs join Zontians worldwide in raising awareness, supporting survivors and calling for effective laws, policies and community action.
